Kentico Review

Editors' Review by the CMS Software Review Team

Kentico is a content management system provider that offers two main products: Kentico Xperience and Kontent. It is the only CMS solution fully integrated with leading digital marketing platforms.

The original Kentico content management system (CMS) is no longer available. Instead, the company now offers two modern products designed to facilitate the unique needs of different businesses and organizations. These products are Xperience and Kontent, both of which are powered by Kentico and include their robust and very familiar content management system. Kentico Xperience is a CMS platform that’s fully integrated with a wide variety of marketing tools and designs for their mid-market clients, while Kentico Kontent is a headless CMS solution that is mainly tailored for the enterprise.

Previously called the Kentico CMS/EMS, Kentico Xperience is the provider’s version of a unified digital experience platform (DXP) that’s geared towards midsize businesses. Xperience is equipped with its own content management system and a comprehensive set of digital marketing and commerce solutions. It enables mid-market companies to develop a more complex and personalized digital experience from a single platform that is designed to scale with the growth of the organization.

Kentico Kontent, previously known as Kentico Cloud, is the developer’s version of a headless CMS solution. It provides businesses and their teams with the ability to strategically plan, create, and collaborate on various types of content in real-time. The software product also gives development teams the flexibility they need to design and create better digital experiences for any and all channels. Kentico Kontent is designed with an API-first approach, which allows it to seamlessly integrate with any existing cloud-based or best-of-breed microservices architecture that many of its users might already have.

Kentico Features

Each of Kentico’s products, i.e. Xperience and Kontent, have different sets of features and tools, although both products are equipped with Kentico’s patented CMS solution. Additionally, the CMS itself has its own features and capabilities that may serve as the common thread between the two products.

Permission-based multi-user access

One of the key features that Kentico CMS offers its business customers is role-based or permission-based multi-user access to the backend. This is a must-have feature for both small- and large-scale operations, as it affords the ability for more than just a single person or employee to gain access to the backend. But this isn’t your typical multi-user access. The CMS platform provides varying levels of access, depending on the user’s role within the organization, their credentials, or their permissions, which are very important. The system allows access for multiple users with different access permissions, providing them only the information that is relevant to their role.

Content management system (CMS)

While Kentico has divided its services into two main products, i.e. Xperience and Kontent, the CMS features in both solutions are quite similar with a few deviations when it comes to scaling and perhaps the use case. For example, Kentico Xperience’s core content management features are a page builder, digital asset management, multi-site management, workflows and versioning, multilingual content, and structured content.

Kentico Kontent, on the other hand, features more advanced and comprehensive content management capabilities such as real-time collaboration and planning, organized content collections, advanced asset management, localization and governance capabilities, customer workflows and approvals, and web spotlight content preview.

Digital marketing and commerce

Kentico also provides digital marketing tools and capabilities through its Kentico Xperience DXP. Some of these features are marketing automation, campaign management, personalization, email marketing, a form builder tool, social media marketing, and SEO, just to name a few. In addition to digital marketing features, Xperience is also equipped with digital commerce features such as a shopping cart and checkout solution, product information management (PIM), promotions and discounts, payment and shipping options, multilingual shopping, multi-store management, and robust commerce integrations.

Customer data platform

Kentico Xperience touches on customer relationship management (CRM) territory through its customer data platform features. Its contact management solution provides a holistic view of an organization’s existing customers. Companies can leverage their customer data, through contact management, to deliver a more personalized customer experience. Aside from contact management, there is also an activity tracking tool that enables users to determine how their customers and site visitors interact with the content on their online store, email messages, and website.

Through Kentico’s customer data features and capabilities, you can group your contacts using a broad range of captured customer information. You can then utilize these segments to facilitate all your digital marketing efforts. Apart from segmentation, Kentico’s customer data platform features also come with lead scoring capabilities, which is a crucial function in digital marketing.

Analytics and reporting

Kentico’s DXP is equipped with reporting and analytics capabilities. It allows you to conduct A/B testing by creating and evaluating multiple variations of your landing pages, email content, marketing campaigns, promos, and special offers to see which strategies and approaches receive the highest engagement from your target audience. The web analytics tool gives you access to multiple metrics that you can then use to keep track of your relevant data, gain access to real-time stats, and obtain actionable insights.

Finally, you can evaluate the performance of your team, your campaigns, and your entire operation with ready-made, customizable reports. You also have the option to create or generate new reports based on your current requirements.

Kentico Benefits

Kentico’s CMS platform offers a lot of benefits to midmarket businesses and enterprises. However, the main benefits that you can expect from the solution through its two core products are the easy-to-use interface, the fully integrated digital marketing and commerce solutions, the robust customization features, and the out-of-the-box functionalities.

A user-friendly interface

Kentico offers two main products: the Kentico Xperience and the Kentico Kontent. Both products are equipped with a wide variety of features and tools, but despite this, the overall user experience isn’t complicated. Both platforms, in general, are quite easy to use and implement, mainly due to their clean and well-designed user interfaces. The CMS solution, in particular, enables web developers, content creators, and editors, as well as other associated teams and individuals, to effortlessly manage content, conduct system updates, and optimize or streamline their day-to-day operations. This results in an increase in productivity and efficiency among all involved personnel.

Versatile all-in-one solutions

Kentico delivers a truly versatile all-in-one CMS platform that caters to midmarket and enterprise businesses. It is the only CMS platform in the market that offers digital marketing, digital commerce, and content management in a single, unified package. With such a range of capabilities, both Kentico products save businesses and organizations from having to deal with disparate systems and the higher costs that are normally associated with such an approach. Every tool or function that any team needs is just a few clicks away.

Robust and comprehensive customization features

Kentico provides a rather robust and comprehensive set of tools and features specifically tailored for customization. This approach helps in encouraging creativity and ensures that companies end up with a business or an ecommerce website that suits the brand and its requirements and overall vision. In addition to customization, Kentico is also equipped with advanced scalability features. This will ensure that the software will effectively and consistently be able to meet the ever-increasing requirements and demands of a growing business.

Impressive out-of-the-box functionalities

Kentico ensures great value for its products by providing its clients and customers with more out-of-the-box functionalities than other solutions and technologies in its category. It facilitates the needs of businesses by helping them create and publish professional-looking and visually appealing websites that can effectively bring in new leads and potential customers. Kentico also allows its users to take advantage of an open API, which enables development teams to easily and quickly integrate other systems and applications into their technology stack.

Kentico Pricing

Kentico offers transparent pricing and licensing options for both its products. Kentico Xperience has three pricing options, while Kentico Kontent has two paid subscriptions and one free. All prices for Xperience are based on a yearly billing cycle.

The Business package for Kentico Xperience has an annual licensing fee that starts at $9,000/year, while the Enterprise plan starts at $15,900/year. The Corporate package is quote-based, so interested parties will need to contact the vendor directly.

For Kentico Kontent, the Developer plan is completely free, and it provides all the essentials for users to develop their own non-commercial project. The next tier up from the Developer plan is Scale, and then the Enterprise plan which both have custom pricing, so you need to contact the vendor directly for your custom quote.

Conclusion

Kentico is a fairly large CMS provider that caters mostly to midmarket and larger enterprises. Both of its products, Kentico Xperience and Kontent, are quite complex and feature-rich. However, both software solutions are unexpectedly easy to use and implement. The user interface in both products is simple, well-designed, and easy to navigate through. Regardless of which product you’re interested in, you can pretty much guarantee that you’re getting the most value for the licensing or the subscription cost.
