Squarespace Review

Editors' Review by the Easy Website Builders Software Review Team

Squarespace is a do-it-yourself website builder, hosting space, and blogging platform. It helps businesses create their personalized domain without having to hire a team of developers. Moreover, the service allows users to not only design and create their space, but also maintain these domains. It is worth noting, however, that these websites cannot be hosted by the users as the websites created are mandatorily hosted by Squarespace itself.

Squarespace lets users not only display their brand but at the same time, also lets them use the system as a sales and marketing platform. With it, not only can users advertise their product and/or services, buyers can also pay for the services and/or products through the website itself, without the need to use any third-party domain to finish the purchasing process.

The mobile-friendly website builder is designed to be as user-friendly as possible so companies would be able to focus more on the content of the website, rather than the website creation process. Moreover, the user is able to not only customize the navigation of the site but also edit the site’s layout.

Squarespace Features

Using Squarespace is easy. The user only has to go to the website builder’s own domain and then click on the “Get Started” button. The service then displays a bevy of templates from which the user selects one. The user can narrow down these selections using the website’s suggestions. There’s also a “Live Preview” button, which allows the user to be able to preview what their site will look like.

Clicking “Start with this design” begins the creation process. Squarespace will prompt the user to enter their credentials to create their own account. After the account is created, a short introduction will play. The template will then load, and the user will have the choice of keeping the created page or starting from scratch.

Creating different parts of the website largely follows a user-friendly process: Pages can be added using the navigation panel, and elements can be attached. The elements’ content may also be modified at the click of a button. A preview is viewable by clicking the eye icon. Website management tools are also located on the same panel, and the user can also use this to edit the site title, configure the advanced settings, and view visitor statistics. In making the website go live, a domain is needed. When the user is ready to publish, the “Upgrade Now” button needs to be clicked to get a free custom domain from Squarespace with the platform’s pricing plans available.

Users are also allowed to set up their websites for eCommerce. Products and services can be shown on the website, where viewers are able to pay for them. Availing of an upgraded plan gives the users the ability to make use of this feature. However, the Personal Plan (see the pricing section of the review below) does not allow users to sell products, nor does it give the users the ability to tweak their websites using CSS or other scripts. However, Business Plan subscribers and above are given the ability to do so.

Squarespace Benefits

Squarespace—owing to its style editor and a wide variety of templates—allows the user to build a professional website without using coding like HTML and other languages. Users are able to edit the site easily because of an easy-to-use content management system.

This platform also allows your sales and marketing efforts to be centralized as well. Not only does it allow you to showcase your products and services, Squarespace allows visitors—as has been mentioned—to purchase and/or avail of services from the website itself. It gives viewers the ability to go through the payment process without using another third-party website.

Squarespace Pricing

Websites

Squarespace has two simple pricing plans. A personal plan, and also a business plan. Both of these plans have a discount if availed on a yearly basis. However, before availing of these, the user will start with a 14-day free trial.

Personal Plan: $12 per month billed annually, or $16 month to month.

This plan features unlimited pages, galleries, and blogs with Unlimited bandwidth and storage as well as allowing for two contributors. The website being designed is going to be optimized for mobile devices and also comes with website metrics. SSL security is also enabled as well as 24/7 customer support. A free custom domain is also included for those who go with the annual purchasing plan.

Business Plan: $18 per month billed annually, or $26 month to month.

This plan comes with all the benefits of the Personal Plan, but also includes $100 Google AdWords Credit, promotional pop-ups, and a fully integrated eCommerce feature. The user is also able to sell unlimited products as well as accept donations, pay just a 3% transaction fee, implement a mobile information bar, make use of complete customization through CSS and JavaScript (as well as premium blocks and integrations), and an announcement bar. It also has an improved version of the Personal Plan’s features, like an advanced website metrics feature, and—if billed annually—includes a professional email from Google.

Online Stores

The online store feature of Squarespace has a different set of pricing plans. This is available for users who also want to showcase services or products and allow in-domain purchasing for site visitors.

Basic Plan: $26 per month billed annually, or $30 month to month.

The plan goes with all the features of the Business Plan. Its features also include an unlimited number of products to sell, no transaction fees, and powerful commerce metrics. Inventory, orders, tax, and discounts are also included, as well as label printing via ShipStation. There is also integrated accounting via Xero, a checkout feature on the domain, and reviewable customer accounts.

Advanced Plan: $40 per month billed annually, or $46 month to month.

This plan comes with all the features included in the Basic Plan, with further features made available. It also comes with abandoned cart recovery, real-time carrier shipping, automatic pre-programmed discounts, gift cards, and orders via API.

Conclusion

The platform allows users to create a website with which to showcase their brand and services, but essentially Squarespace is designed for users who do not want to tinker with coding when creating their site. As such, it is an option worth considering for users who have little or no knowledge about coding and/or do not want the hassle of coding.

"Squarespace templates saved tons of my time"

What do you like about Squarespace?

I enjoy using Squarespace's desinged templates. The interface is easy to understand and intuitive. I didn't have to spend a lot of time learning how to use the tool.

What do you dislike about Squarespace?

I feel like sometimes some of the templates that I choose might take some more time to reload. Other than the loading speed, the overall features are good and easy to learn for me.

"Squarespace: the perfect tool for showcasing your portfolio"

What do you like about Squarespace?

Squarespace offers a vast collection of professionally / beautifully designed templates that serve as a strong foundation for building a professional website. These templates are not only visually appealing but also highly versatile. I particularly appreciate the attention to detail in each template. Another aspect that stood out to me is Squarespace's powerful content management system (CMS) with the intuitive and user-friendly interface and built-in analytics and SEO features.

What do you dislike about Squarespace?

The customization options, while extensive, can sometimes feel limiting for more advanced users who desire deeper control over the website's code. Squarespace's design flexibility is primarily focused on their pre-designed templates, which may not fully satisfy users who prefer to have complete freedom in designing their websites from scratch.
Another aspect that can be a drawback for some users is the pricing plans can be relatively expensive.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Squarespace solve?

I have been using Squarespace for multiple purposes, primarily for creating and managing visually appealing and modern website designs, and implementing e-commerce solutions for my clients. Squarespace's templates have saved me significant time and effort, allowing me to quickly provide my clients with visually engaging websites that align with their brand identity.

"Create your website with big ability working tools"

// Product Manager at vrTech Trade

What do you like about Squarespace?

Ease of use, this is one of the strangest part of this service, because you can quickly design a website and teach your client how to use it. Modern design and good templates, this is another strength, because it makes your company look pretty and thus you. Also, all pages adapt very well for smartphones and tablets. There are mobile-specific options you can change too. Customer service is one of the best in industry. You talk to a real human with a personality.

What do you dislike about Squarespace?

The way you place images on your web pages is wonky. It doesn't work like a rich text box, and it's not as simple as just drag and drop. You have to add spacers here and there. But the annoying thing with spacers is that you're limited to certain sizes.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Squarespace solve?

Our organization uses Squarespace to run our company website. We use it as a web presence to inform people about our products.

"Great tool to increase a good work "

// Project Manager at vrTech Trade

What do you like about Squarespace?

Squarespace has professional, appealing templates. It also allows you to change templates as well without affecting your live website while working on an update, which we are currently doing. The first setup is very easy and user-friendly. Several options for customizing items, such as choosing four flavors to go into a four pack. The payment through Stripe is very secure as well.

What do you dislike about Squarespace?

I'd like to see a few more business-centric templates. They have some good ones but the majority are for consumer websites or design type of businesses. Although, sometimes it can be a little difficult to shift things around.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Squarespace solve?

I've used Squarespace for both personal use and business use. I prefer Squarespace to many of their competitors because they have a fabulous Google Analytics integration.

"Simple, Clever Site Builder"

// Comms Consultant at MediaMixUp

What do you like about Squarespace?

Above everything, I like the results. Sure, it's easy to use, but no more so than other CMS/site builders. Rather, it's the end product that's glorious. The design templates look great to start with and lose nothing with amateur editing. Maybe that suggests a lack of flexibility, though I've not felt that. Simply, Squarespace sites end up looking good.

What do you dislike about Squarespace?

Of course, there are sometimes things you think you might like to do with your site and then you find out you can't, depending on template and whatnot. But I don't think that's ever the problem. There are small restrictions to what can be done simply because of the nature of site builders. You can overcome them by googling hard or learning code... So no, there's no issue with Squarespace and what it can do. My only small issue might be that the price can get a bit steep if you're running a few Squarespace sites, adding ecommerce, storing a lot of data. But hey, they've made my life easy.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Squarespace solve?

I use Squarespace for simple blog-type sites and, in one instance, for something more involved and commercial. In both cases it does what it needs to.

"Excellent Value for the Money - So Easy to Use"

What do you like about Squarespace?

Squarespace is an easy to use website that has Amazon affiliate capabilities built right in. I've been using it for over 5 years and it's my highest preference. Compared to Weebly, Wix and others, SS gets me to a professional looking site in half the time. The built-in shopping carts, integration with social media via "Connected Accounts" and other integrated features make it a great value.

Recent updates such as duplicate a blog post is a major time saver. You can make blog post templates, duplicate the template, plug in the new info, and you're done!

Customer service is quick, polite, expert and always available via email. I get answers and updates within the hour.

I highly recommend SquareSpace for beginners and experts alike. They gave me a free trial at the beginning, and you can get a free domain name with certain plans.

What do you dislike about Squarespace?

Recently, with a login update, the site goes "dead" in a Firefox or Chrome browser when the tab has been inactive for 30 minutes or so, which is annoying. I have to tab to the end of the URL, hit enter, and let the page reload to be able to work in the admin.

Also, when I add a block a blog post, the screen jumps up to the top and I have to scroll down to add data the block.

Both aren't deal breakers, but add unnecessary time to my day.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Squarespace solve?

I use SS for my business website. It's helped me draw clients and post multiple blogs. My business has grown due to SS and its ease of use.

"Great product."

// Director of Innovation at Meltwater Group

Personally, I've been really happy with squarespace for hosting simple company websites. It's so nice, and fast. The only point I didn't like was there e-commerce. While they've got the basics of ecommerce functionality, which looks great on desktop and mobile, they are missing some key features. Namely a way to export products. I was able to find a third party app (http://export-squarespace-products.com) that allowed me to get the job done, but I think this should be built in. All this said, I still give them FIVE stars. Especially from a content perspective.
