S4labour is designed and built by a team of people with extensive experience running some of the best know hospitality brands in the U.K.

Alastair Scott, CEO and co-founder of Catton Hospitality and later S4labour, formerly worked for Mitchells & Butlers and was charged with making their labour and deployments as efficient and effective as it could be. Having fine-tuned exactly how to manage rotas and deploy people for optimal shifts in a variable environment, Alastair teamed up with Phil Lunn, CTO a hospitality veteran himself, to set up and build S4labour.

Since then, S4labour has grown and recruited predominantly from the hospitality sector, meaning there is a depth of experience and insight into our client’s world that is rich and genuine.

What do you like about S4labour?

S4labour has been an invaluable part of our business for the last 2 years. We were looking for a system that would help give us visibility of our labour costs, that we suspected were far to high. The training we received when we onboarded with S4labour was fantastic, we have a dedicated account manger who came to one of our sites and spent the day running through how to use the system with the team. Since then we have done various other training, including mystery shopping our teams to make sure that we are getting the full use of the system.

The team are generally really impressed with the app and how they are able to see their rotas, manage their holidays, view live data about who is on site, swap shifts and lots more. This is a God send for our managers, who have all the H.R. information such as holiday accrual, time and attendance, all in one place.

The shift success product that was recently released has seen our spend per head increase nearly 6%, a massive achievement for us.

We were recommended S4labour by a fellow operator and we would always be delighted to recommend them to others.

What do you dislike about S4labour?

It is difficult to say what we don’t like about S4labour, they have delivered everything we have asked for and everything they said they would from the get go, however, if we were nit picking, I would suggest the rota page could load a a little bit quicker, it is ever so slightly slow, around 5 to 10 seconds each time on the desktop version. This is clearly slower than other webpages such as Facebooks loading speed.

We often discuss future developments with the team and know they always listen to our feedback. Would maybe like to see some of the updates more quickly. However, communication with me as well as the back of house and front of house team is always really good. The account management is actually excellent, they are always available to help.

What have you been using it for and what problems did S4labour solve?

We use S4labour to manage our team. It is the perfect tool to rota team members when we need them. The labour analysis links up to our tills so we know what sales we are likely to do at any time and how to rota our team to deliver those sales. We never have too many people rotered or too few people rotered. Because of this, we have maximised our sales since using it and saves tens of thousands of pounds on labour costs.

We also use it to manage holidays and accrual rates.

We use the payroll service to make sure our teams are paid, tax is deducted in the right way, pensions contributions are made, all according to the hours they have worked.

S4labour has enabled us to better communicate with our teams and keep them engaged and well briefed. This has had a massive impact on sales.
