Mendix Review

Editors' Review by the Development Software Review Team

Mendix is an all-in-one high-productivity app platform meant for DevOps teams and firms to create and continuously enhance web and mobile apps at scale with no-code and low-code tooling.

The Mendix platform is specifically tailored to facilitate and accelerate the enterprise app delivery process throughout the whole application development lifecycle, from the ideation phase all the way to the development stage and operations. The all-in-one platform allows users to implement both agile team and DevOps best practices. In many cases, the software solution even goes beyond that by involving and collaborating with business stakeholders in the actual development process of the applications.

Mendix supports both no-code and low-code tooling and offers them in a single, fully integrated solution. With no-code tooling, Mendix delivers a web-based visual application modeling studio that is specifically designed for business domain specialists and professionals. For the low-code tooling, the platform offers an extensive and robust desktop-based visual application modeling studio. This is geared towards professional developers and development teams and can be fully integrated with coding IDEs to extend and maximize the tool’s capabilities.

The main objective of this no-code and low-code combo is to enable business domain specialists such as analysts and citizen or nontechnical developers to work effectively alongside expert developers and professionals, allowing them to accomplish better collaboration at a sustainable level and much greater alignment and expedited product delivery. In addition, the Mendix platform’s cloud-native design, along with its automation tools, is fully capable of supporting the management, deployment and overseeing of readily accessible enterprise-grade applications.

Mendix can also serve as a powerful IT management solution that is capable of helping government institutions, agencies and enterprises reach their digital goals as modern organizations. Nowadays, every business and organization has to be able to digitize its internal operations in order to ensure more streamlined, cost-effective and effortless tasks and processes. With this approach, companies should have the capability to launch new digital products and services more efficiently and increase their revenue in the process.

Mendix Features

Visual development solutions

Mendix’s visual development solution empowers its users, regardless of their skill sets, to create applications through a set of tools and features that are easy to use and implement. One of these visual development tools is Mendix Studio, a solution that provides a tailored environment for nontechnical or citizen developers. It offers a frictionless entry point into the world of app development. Citizen developers are given the tools and resources they need to actively co-create applications using a browser-based work environment that’s specifically tailored to facilitate their skill level.

Mendix Studio is a relatively simple to use and easy to implement solution that offers a what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) environment that allows nontechnical domain users to ideate and iterate in a much more efficient and expedited manner.

Mendix Studio Pro, on the other hand, is mainly geared towards professional developers and experts. It gives them access to more advanced tools and capabilities so they can engage in the co-creation of more complex apps and solutions. Although all application models are shared automatically between both Mendix integrated development environments (IDEs) in a bi-directional manner, Mendix Studio Pro incorporates complex logic and enables users to create more advanced integrations in order to develop enterprise-grade, transactional mobile and web applications.

Mendix Studio Pro offers a desktop-based development environment, which includes all of the functions and capabilities required for more sophisticated application and software development processes such as the ability to incorporate custom code when the need arises.

Collaborative development solutions

The Mendix platform supports collaborative development through agile project management, feedback management, team development and social buzz solutions. You can manage all your development projects much more easily and effectively from a single, well-optimized application platform. It also allows you to work seamlessly with a diverse team of collaborators when developing more advanced applications, without creating serious risk or significant technical discrepancies. You can turn to the platform’s version control function to automatically bring together all the work done by multiple participants and teams into a single, cohesive version that’s connected directly to user stories.

You can leverage feedback management throughout the entire app journey in order to continuously iterate in-process solutions and applications, while maintaining constant contact with professional developers and domain experts for consultations. During the post-development of applications, you can use the platform to tap into the thoughts and experiences of end-users not directly participating in the development process. You can then turn their feedback into actionable insights and user stories that will drive your team’s next development initiatives.

You can use the platform’s intuitive web portal to leverage social buzz. It offers cross-functional communication so you can easily gain insights and collaborate with your entire extended team, from professional developers to business stakeholders and clients.

Cloud-native and multi-cloud solutions

With Mendix’s cloud-native and multi-cloud solutions, you will have complete freedom to simplify your entire operation. You will have the tools necessary to streamline your multi-cloud operations, deliver solutions quicker and modernize your development and operations processes simultaneously. Mendix applications are cloud-native by default, which means they are containerized, scalable, resilient and portable right out of the box. This also means that you can easily build modern, microservice apps without the need for specialized processes. You’re free to deploy and implement your solutions anywhere and scale to match your requirements without redesigning.

When it comes to multi-cloud solutions, The Mendix platform can support private cloud, public cloud, hybrid cloud and on-premises without the complexities that are normally associated with such deployment options. You have complete multi-cloud freedom. The choice is totally yours to make and Mendix’s applications will run whatever platform you’ve chosen. One of Mendix’s multi-cloud deployment options is the Mendix Cloud. This is a cloud-native application platform-as-a-service (aPaaS) that is specifically optimized for Mendix applications.

Mendix for Private Cloud is specifically designed for low-ops application lifecycle management, allowing you to bring your apps to your own virtual (Kubernetes-based) private cloud. You can simultaneously modernize your Dev and Ops, deliver solutions faster and deal with your development backlog using the advanced, cutting-edge infrastructure. Another deployment option is the Mendix Cloud Dedicated. This is the cloud deployment option that makes it possible to have a dedicated instance of Mendix’s cloud-native aPaaS. With this option, you can gain complete control and isolation of your environments with the simplicity and ease of use of managed services, the platform’s premier cloud offering.

"Great platform "

What do you like about Mendix?

The rapidness of releasing a brand-new app or carrying out modifications. I like that I have the ability to establish an application in a visual way, where all business reasoning is quickly used. Mendix has an active community online forum that you can utilize to ask concerns may you get stuck to an issue.

What do you dislike about Mendix?

I'm missing out on the performance to include security on a designer level. It would be good to see designer security functions that lock particular module such that junior designers can be locked out of some modules or end-users can be allowed the design.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Mendix solve?

I've dealt with Mendix on both completely brand-new jobs as tasks that are on the go for a couple of years. That it's so simple to simply dig in and getting up to speed in really brief notification makes Mendix practical for essentially any kind of task.
