What is GroupMap?

GroupMap is a real-time online collaborative brainstorming and decision-making tool.

The effective way to brainstorm, discuss and decide

You’ve probably encountered the usual issues of group decision making. People who dominate the conversation, quiet folks whose ideas never get heard, and of course all those post-it notes you have to write up. GroupMap solves this by capturing individual thinking first, then revealing the group perspective, all in real-time. Now that’s true collaborative decision making.

Design your activity

Start from over 60 brainstorming templates, or design your own. Our templates include SWOT, 6 Thinking Hats, Perceptual Maps, Stakeholder Maps, Risk Maps, Mind Maps, the Lean Business Canvas and many others…

Customize your process

GroupMap is very flexible so you can build maps around your own process. We keep the interface simple so you can focus on brainstorming solutions. We provide you the basic process steps – brainstorming, grouping, positioning, voting, rating, actioning, survey and consent – you can customize and organize them how you’d like.

"GroupMap helps our community reach consensus"

What do you like about GroupMap?

Our organization loves GroupMap. We have used it since 2022, primarily to build a unified, statewide Early Childhood Agenda for policy and advocacy. Our 500+ community meets on Zoom, and has asynchronous collaboration. In the span of 10-15 minutes we are able to collect rich and insightful feedback from our many partners. Then we can organize, sort, upvote, etc. We think GroupMap is the best technology platform for this kind of work. We'd highly recommend trying it out, especially if you are a nonprofit that works in policy, advocacy, and coalitions. Thank you.

What do you dislike about GroupMap?

There's nothing to dislike really. Everything works well, and there are customizations for font size, colors, etc. Customer service is good, but we haven't much needed to rely on them. The product is intuitive and very useful.

"Extraordinary Collaboration!"

What do you like about GroupMap?

From ease of use across a range of devices to the premade and customizable templates, GroupMap makes it far easier to collaborate and collect that data - whether in-person or virtual. The Workspaces allow you to theme topics - or groups - depending upon your purpose. The maps themselves are easy to use and customize by situation. The interface is very accessible for participants while the processes offered in design can be simple or as complex as warranted.

What do you dislike about GroupMap?

I have not yet found elements of GroupMap that I am dissatisfied with. I am sure it is imperfect for all situations, but in my experience, I have been able to do what I need.

What have you been using it for and what problems did GroupMap solve?

I began using GroupMap in 2020 as I needed to find a solution to the in-person complex collaboration that was core to my work. From groups of 5 to groups of 200+, I needed a virtual space that offered the processes that I used to do on writable walls, etc. that felt as interactive (or as close as possible) to in-person experiences. GroupMap offered the templates that I used to use for thinking and working in-person in a well-designed, attractive, and easy to use format. I was able to instantly transform my work into this space. From problem solving in small teams to gathering input from large teams to guide strategy, vision, and actions to take, GroupMap supported , and even accelerated this work.

"GroupMap's usefulness for public engagement and group facilitation"

What do you like about GroupMap?

I use it for my classes and for events tied to the CSU Center for Public Deliberation, and it has been critical to our shift to online due to Covid. It has been such a useful tool, that we will likely still find ways to use it when back to in person events, and will likely still over some online event as an alternative in part because of what we can do with GroupMap. Most useful aspect of GroupMap for me it is versatility. Great in particular for brainstorming and evaluation of ideas, but can also help with project management. One of my favorite features is the various anonymity options (full, partial, or none), which can be very useful for different situations.

What do you dislike about GroupMap?

Cost overall reasonable, but would be nice to have more flexibility for adding additional facilitators for specific meetings/maps without having to add them for an entire month at full cost. Similarly, being able to have increase the upper limit for individual meetings could help. Most of my meetings are 30 to 50, but maybe a few times a year I may be over 100.

What have you been using it for and what problems did GroupMap solve?

I use it in classes and workshops, particularly because it can work really well both asynchronously and synchronously, and bouncing back and forth. Students or participants can answer questions between classes or meetings, and then when we come together, we can evaluate or rate the collected ideas, and organize our time efficiently. I often work with teams of facilitators running larger meetings, and GroupMap can work well as a shared screen to collect ideas.
