What is Brain FM?

Brain.fm is a streaming music service that produces a continuous loop of computer-generated music that helps work, relax, read or sleep.

Brain.fm delivers music for the brain and helps you focus, relax, and meditate using a combination of bimodal tones. It provides music designed for the brain that brings improvements within 10 - 15 minutes of use.

The AI engine produces the limitless amount of music, with rhythms required for audio brain entrainment. Among others, it includes a base level of white noise shushing, different bird tweets, and a quiet electronic drone. All of the music on this service is originally created, set to stream for specific periods of time.

Users first decide whether they need help for work, relax, or sleep, and after that, the service designs the “brainwave” of music for them to listen to. The creation of the music is powered by complex music-composing AI engine. The whole concept is based on the idea that people's attention occurs in waves, such as speech, walking, and other rhythm-based activities.

Brain FM Review

Editors' Review by the Productivity Tools Software Review Team

Brain FM, or Brain.fm as it is stylized, is a tool that helps the brain relax and focus with the help of music. In addition, it also helps individuals who have sleeping problems. Results are evident in more or less 10 to 15 minutes, as it improves concentration and induces sleep.

With the bimodal tones it produces, Brain.fm streams different kinds of music—such as bird tweets and white noise—that are essential for brain stimulation.

The concept of Brain.fm is based on the idea of using music to “train” the brainwaves. These brain waves are the electrical activity produced by the neurons in the brain and are largely responsible for the communication process, including the one involved in the formation of thoughts.

All the sound produced by Brain.fm is what helps change brain waves so individuals listening to the music will experience a shift in their mental state.

Brain FM Features

Brain.fm uses AI or Artificial Intelligence in producing original music intended for audio brainwave training. What it does is create rhythms that are essential for the brainwaves so your brain is stimulated and its cognitive state improved.

Music for Brain.fm is a software solution for enhancing mental performance, as well as for therapy. Thus, it helps you improve your sleeping behavior, your focus, and even your performance at work, at home, or in school. Brain.fm also helps you relax even when you are in the middle of a challenging task or activity, all through music.

As previously stated, the audio produced by Brain.fm is created by an AI engine. The number of music pieces it produces is endless. As such, you’re sure to get original music every time you use the tool.

Additionally, this AI engine makes it possible for the music or audio it produces to follow the rhythm needed for audio brainwave training. It also sounds like natural music created by humans so you’re guaranteed to get music that you understand.

Now, it may sound like a complicated product but Brain.fm is actually quite easy to use.

Once you have Brain.fm on your smartphone (or laptop/desktop), the next thing you have to do is sign up for an account. After completing that process, you can start customizing your Brain.fm experience.

You can choose from three modes: Focus, Relax, and Sleep. Focus is best for when you are working or doing a creative project (or anything similar) and need to boost your focus and concentration (and be more productive). Relax is for when you want to calm or slow down, such as when you need to meditate or take a break. The Sleep option is for people who have problems sleeping.

After you have chosen the mode that addresses your needs, you’ll be ready for your Brain.fm experience.

What makes Brain.fm effective is the fact that it does not produce only regular or mainstream music—it creates a 3D musical experience that’s completely immersive.

So, if you choose the Focus option, what you’ll get is music that sounds like it comes from a big monitor or screen in front of you. You’ll be totally surrounded by the audio so even if your surroundings are heavily populated by a variety of sounds, you’ll hear only the music streamed by Brain.fm.

Choices for the Focus mode include beach focus, forest focus, cinematic music focus, rain focus, night sounds focus, electronic music focus, chimes and bowls focus, and thunder focus.

If you choose the Relax option, the music from Brain.fm will be all around you, traveling to every part of your body. So even the small voices in your mind will be drowned out.

For the Relax mode, the choices are rain relax, chimes and bowls relax, night sounds relax, forest relax, underwater relax, ambient music relax, wind relax, rain relax, and thunder relax.

If you need help sleeping, you’ll choose the Sleep option, which can be of assistance to you in many ways. Brain.fm’s music for sleeping is different because it does not only put you to sleep—rather, it helps you get into a deep sleep, something that’s becoming increasingly difficult to achieve nowadays.

Additionally, then there’s the slow wave sleep, which is essential in improving cognition, mood, memory, aging, and metabolism.

The Sleep mode allows you to choose from a variety of options including ambient music sleep, rain sleep, beach sleep, thunder sleep, forest sleep, underwater sleep, night sounds sleep, and wind sleep, among others.

Barin.fm is available as a web-based service for Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. It is also available as a mobile app for both iOS and Android.

"Amazing, and actually works"

What do you like about Brain FM?

I do a lot of writing and 'deep work' in my job and flicking on Brain.fm is an absolute guaranteed way to get me focused. If my head feels scattered and I need to get something done, Brain.fm has me on track again within 10-15 mins of putting the music on. There are also a lot of music style options now, whereas it was pretty one dimensional when I first starting using it. It's also great to have the different options for meditation, sleep, relaxation, deep vs light focused work, etc., but my main use case is for deep focused work.

What do you dislike about Brain FM?

The UI is a little basic and clunky, but it's not really a big deal. I'd also like shorter meditation options - would be great to gamify and track meditation, sleep, focused work, etc. in a similar way to Headspace does with just the meditation side of things.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Brain FM solve?

Getting and staying focused, guided meditation, relaxation.
