Grammarly Review

Editors' Review by the Productivity Tools Software Review Team

Each week we feature an app that has caught our or the Crozdesk community’s attention. We look for exciting features that make our lives easier, apps that take a radical approach to existing problems or a service that has everyone talking about it. In other words: Apps that we think you should know about.

This week’s featured app is Grammarly – a browser extension and web app, that helps you improve your writing skills by reducing your grammar and spelling mistakes. The integrated service and app Grammarly has seen an amazing growth since its foundation 7 years ago, and today it claims to be “the world’s leading automated proofreader” winning multiple awards in the tech industry!

Your writing skills matter to you?

Whether you are a content producer, blogger, marketer or are just keen on using proper grammar and spelling in all your email communications, Grammarly is a tool you should consider.

The functionality and seamless integration into important online services allow for a smooth correction process. The downsides of the app are limited and don’t impact productivity to a great extent.

Installation and Sign up Process

The first thing you will want to do when using Grammarly is install their plugin for your browser. Since Chrome is the most widespread browser used nowadays, this review is based on the Grammarly Chrome extension.

After installing the extension (and a restart, Chrome Version 47.0.2499.1 Canary) I was able to log in, using the review credentials Grammarly has provided us with, that do include premium features so we could test them.

But don’t worry, if you don’t have an account yet: The sign up process is as simple as it can get. Open the app, click the big sign up button and you should be good to go in a few seconds. No form filling skills required here. After you have signed up there is no additional login required so you can start straight away. So let’s get crackin’!

UI / UX

Grammarly comes in two flavours: The integrated pop-up in the services/domains that Grammarly already works with and a dedicated web app where you can upload and create documents, change your account details, etc. Both are easy to use, and I had no problems finding my way around (for there is little to fumble around with).

Grammarly should work on every website except the following:

  • grammarly.com – and subdomains, but you would use the app here anyways
  • app.asana.com
  • hootsuite.com
  • plus.google.com
  • chrome.google.com
  • facebook.com – the extension is disabled in the chat fields
  • onedrive.live.com
  • docs.com
  • sp.docs.com
  • docs.google.com
  • jsbin.com
  • jsfiddle.net
  • quora.com
  • mail.live.com

Integrated overlay

Using Grammarly in Gmail or Facebook is pretty easy and well designed. Grammarly shows a summary number of the errors it found throughout your text and categorises them into two sections: critical and advanced issues. Correcting advanced issues does require a premium license, though. Critical errors can be corrected in the popup that allows you to work through your text, check the reasoning behind each error and receive suggestions on how to edit it – ranked by priority and criticalness.

No confusing buttons, functions or popups that you have to dismiss. Most corrections can be implemented by clicking on the suggestions so you don’t have to do much manual labour.

Web app

The web app is as simple as the pop-up. The icons and navigation panel are designed in a clear and concise way with good contrast and an intuitive layout. The top search bar allows you to search within documents and titles so you can easily look up past texts you have corrected. When editing texts, you can enable/disable separate functions to adjust the app to your needs. If, for example, you are writing a case study with quotes, just adjust your text type to “Case study” in the document type menu and disable the plagiarism function to avoid being spammed with notifications.

Pricing

Grammarly offers an individual premium plan that you can subscribe to on a monthly ($29.95), quarterly ($59.95) or annual ($139.95) basis. With access to the premium features, you can edited advanced issues, and do over 250 new, premium checks on a wide range of premium-only document types like student essays, business reports, and novels.

Other licensing options are available for enterprises or educational and governmental institutions.

The Crash Test: How does it perform?

Disclaimer: As experts in the SaaS industry we do our fair share of content creation and lots of online reading. However, we do not qualify as professional proofreaders or have the qualifications of a language expert. The writer of this article is not a native speaker. Please consider this when reading the next paragraph. Feel free to comment and show further errors that are not covered in the comment section and we will be happy to implement them and check with Grammarly.

Now, obviously the competence and detection skills of a writing correction app are an important factor.

I tested Grammarly using the following dummy email to my co-worker Stéphane for our Crozdesk page. This is our testing paragraph:

Hi Stéphane, thank you to intro ducing my to Grammarly. Your a really, really cool collegue! But lets see how much of my mistakse grammarly was able to found. The test Im writing has a few errors and grammatical issue to found.

There are a total of 11 critical errors (+/- 1 depending on how you count) and a few wording mistakes, nothing too complex and something everyone should be able to grasp. Here is the corrected paragraph (spelling is highlighted in orange, grammar in red, wording in blue):

Hi Stéphane, thank you for introducing me to Grammarly. You’re a really, really cool colleague! But let’s see how many of my mistakes Grammarly is able to find. The text I’m writing includes a few errors and grammatical issues that can be found.

The following screenshot shows the Grammarly pop-up in Gmail without corrections:

Grammarly Review Google Mail plugin before corrections

This is what the text looks like after applying all suggested corrections in the right order:

Grammarly Review Google Mail plugin after corrections

Here is the text in clear writing:

Hi Stéphane, thank you for introducing me to Grammarly. You’re a cool colleague! But let’s see how much of my mistakes Grammarly was able to found. The test I’m writing has a few errors and grammatical issue to found.

Let’s run through the mistakes Grammarly was not able to identify:

  • “But let’s see how much of my mistakes Grammarly was able to found.” – Two mistakes still in this sentence (wrong determiner and tense construction): […] see how many of my mistakes Grammarly is able to find.
  • “The test I’m writing has a few errors and grammatical issue to found” – Two or three mistakes here (wording, plural and sentence construction): The text I’m writing includes a few errors and grammatical issues to be found. Better: The text I’m writing includes a few errors and grammatical issues that can be found.

Though the tense errors should be fairly obvious to detect and in other instances the app does perform better on this skill set, they were not highlighted in the test. The word swap “text” for “test” is due to the context of the paragraph as one and could be excused. What Grammarly still needs to work on is the recognition of missing plurals (here: the word “issue” in the last sentence). The app also didn’t suggest adding the preposition “a” to correct for the singularity of the noun nor added the “s” to account for the plural, but all in all it caught most mistakes.

Cons

  • Formatting
Though this is a well established working guideline when you are used to writing, new bloggers and content creators might find that a bit confusing: If you want to use the online App, it will remove all formatting and hyperlinks from your text when you just paste the text from a different application. If you want to keep your formatting use the upload/download function. Applies only to the web app, not the plugin!
  • Readability
In my case, Grammarly used a serif font in a web browser window to display the web app text. Depending on the screen resolution you use to view the app, this might be a little hard to read, especially when you have set a custom zoom to your window. Applies only to the web app, not the plugin!
  • Reliability
As seen in the competence section of this review, the algorithm does not detect all the errors that are hidden in a text – including some simple ones.

Pros

  • Accessible and integrated
No matter where you work: in Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, your blog or an offline document: Grammarly has your back, offering instant corrections and text analysis.
  • Better corrections than other apps
What makes Grammarly better than the rest is the combination of a very high accuracy in finding mistakes, and it’s large community to help you figure out the more tricky ones, when it comes to intention and meaning of your text.

Stop worrying about your spelling mistakes and start being productive – Check out their profile on Crozdesk and get started with Grammarly today!

Grammarly is available as a Chrome, Safari and Firefox browser extension, to work with your online tools, and as a Word® and Outlook®  add-on. They even have Mac plugin in the pipeline. Though Grammarly does not support Google Docs yet, Affiliate Marketing Associate Galyna Kovalenko told us that they are currently looking into that.

"Grammarly, your pocket dictionary buddy"

What do you like about Grammarly?

I really like Grammarly as a side-app partner, that always watches whenever you're writing and corrects you if you're wrong, like it should be, a real friend that notifies you that something is wrong or needs to be changed.

What do you dislike about Grammarly?

I do not like about Grammarly that on some occasions the freemium corrections may miss the point of what you're trying to say, but in all honesty, it's a really incredible and useful tool.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Grammarly solve?

I've been using grammarly for a year now, helping every time I write something on a text area field, correcting me when I'm wrong, and interacting with it whenever I could use some paraphrasing or a different context.

""Grammerly is Best ""

What do you like about Grammarly?

This is an incredibly useful things you can use enhance keyboard settings. There are even multiple built-in settings. Autocorrect, spelling corrections. You can customise the theme to dark mode or light mode and you can add language. The keyboard is super useful. It works great even with a physical keyboard. Very nice app and improved my word selection and perfect app for english grammer.

What do you dislike about Grammarly?

I had a terrible experience with this app because it fails sometimes making more mistake using this keyboard. Autocorrect doesn't work very well and when tapping suggestions in grammer check, it erases the part it has issues but some issues doesn't replaces it. Unfortunately with some update things have gone pretty good to very bad.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Grammarly solve?

Grammerly writing assistant and grammar checker lets you spell check, correct, edit and perfect my messages from my device. Check and correct english grammar, spelling, punctuation and more. Grammerly is good for correcting mistakes and improving grammatical errors for my project work. I am sure it makes faster response and text. This app always better for homework, notes and projects.

"Good tool for avoiding writing mistakes"

What do you like about Grammarly?

Grammarly is a grammar and spelling checker that catches even the smallest errors in your writing. It helped me be more effective at what I do without missing any mistakes, and it comes also as an extension option.

What do you dislike about Grammarly?

Difficult to use with Microsoft Office. Also, the pricing is a little high for me, this is why I use the free version.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Grammarly solve?

Every day, I spend countless hours typing and writing something. Grammarly works in the background to make sure what I'm writing is error-free because it's important that every word count for me. It catches everything before you even see it on screen and helps make what comes out better than if left unchecked by human eyes alone

"GRAMMARLY HELPS YOU WRITE A BETTER PAPER"

What do you like about Grammarly?

I like everything about Grammarly! I remember the old days where you had to check your own work by hand and then ask a second person to double check your work. This was before the technology we have now. My daughter and I are going to college together and she introduced me to this lifesaver. It picks up mistakes in grammar (of course) but also sentence structure. It makes excellent suggestions for replacement wordage.

What do you dislike about Grammarly?

All of the high pressure ads to take out the service past my trail period. It's very aggressive sales tactics and I am about to not subscribe just because I am annoyed. I have also noticed that Grammarly picks up what it thinks is a "mistake' when it's actually not. This doesn't happen too often but shouldn't happen at all. And, it's a little pricey. I would say its worth the price if not for all the harassment prior to purchase.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Grammarly solve?

My daughter just started her Freshman year of college and I am working on my masters. She introduced me to this wonderful software and it's become a constant companion. I don't see how I made it years ago without it.

"Grammarly Helps you Avoid Unnecessary Mistakes"

What do you like about Grammarly?

There's something to be said about a program that can make you appear smarter than you might be. It's especially wonderful for people like me who are Grammarly challenged. I wouldn't tell my daughter's new Chinese foreign exchange student pal to take it on a test run if English is not her first language. You have to be able to grasp the basics of the written English language or you will be lost. It is great in picking up on technical errors.

What do you dislike about Grammarly?

The price for prime service for one. It's a little on the pricey side. If you take out the less expensive run expect to be harassed to the point of irritation about upgrading. Expect emails, phone calls and even text messages offering an upgrade. I have noticed on occasion that some of the suggestions it makes does not match the sentence it's reviewing. Just a little inconsistent. I heard co-workers complain about trying to unsubscribe from Grammarly but not being able to. That would certainly annoy me if I wanted to discontinue my account and was ignored.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Grammarly solve?

I use this software for just about any document or even email I send to make sure my spelling and grammar are on point. First impression are just that...first and can never be repeated. Why run the risk of ruining that impression of yourself by using bad grammar when you have Grammarly that can help you behind the scenes? There is nothing wrong with using the tools that are out there to help you succed. It's not cheating to admit you need help.

"An Essential Tool for Every Writer"

What do you like about Grammarly?

This is one of a very short list of software that I would consider to be essential. I write a lot at my job, for numerous different purposes (i.e. social media posts, grant writing, formal press releases, etc.). Anything that I write beyond a quick e-mail is run through Grammarly. When I started using it I was amazed at the errors that it was catching that my run of the mill spell check did not. Grammarly also makes sentence structure and writing suggestions, which help improve the quality of my writing. Over time, I feel that Grammarly has helped to improve my skills as a writer by teaching me about grammatical and linguistic conventions that I had never even thought of before! While I currently use the paid version, there is also a free version that I used for a few months that was fairly comprehensive as well.

What do you dislike about Grammarly?

I have never figured out how to make it work with Microsoft Word, and as a result, I need to copy and paste my text directly onto the website. This is a bit annoying, and an additional step that seems like it should be unnecessary.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Grammarly solve?

I have been a Grammarly user for about two years. I have always considered myself to be a strong writer but using Grammarly really helped show me where my weaknesses were (i.e. use of passive voice, inconsistent tenses). These are things that I would have never learned about had I not become a user of this software.

"Grammarly - a very helpful editing tool"

// Instructional Technology Facilitator at Greenville County Schools

What do you like about Grammarly?

From the start, I want to be clear that I use the free version. I have yet to make the dive and purchase a yearly subscription. So this review is contingent on that. Here's what I like:
- With regards to free platforms, Grammarly seems to be the best option out there fore catching errors, offering corrections, misspelled words, etc. I haven't found a better free option that offers this level of support.
- It works smoothly with any typing I need to do on webpages (I use the Chrome extension). I do not have to press start or initiate anything, it just quietly kicks in and begins offering assistance when needed. It's easy to start using.
- I feel like it's corrections are right on - highly appropriate and accurate. In the past, I've noticed that I disagreed from time to time with recommendations offered by other tools, but Grammarly is good stuff!
- It has a nice, simple feel. It's not overwhelming (like a red ink pen from a grammar teacher). It just offers a simple explanation.
- I do know that the subscription offers much more - noticed inconsistent writing styles, unclear sentence structure, wordiness, and even picks on language that may come across as impolite.
- You have the opportunity to build a personal dictionary. If you use a word commonly that it does not recognize, you can add that word to the dictionary to avoid future notifications.

What do you dislike about Grammarly?

- Bear in mind that it's probably not best for first-time English users. I'm thinking Grammarly would work best with user who are already familiar with the English language.
- The monthly subscription just seems a bit pricey to me.
- It does not work with Google (yet, but maybe one day).

What have you been using it for and what problems did Grammarly solve?

I spend a lot of hours daily typing/writing something, somewhere. Grammarly quietly works in the background to ensure that what I've written is without error.
