What is ManageEngine Device Control Plus?

Device Control Plus is a DLP solution that controls and blocks access to a diverse range of peripheral devices that connect to endpoints in a business IT network.

Depending on the nature of the industry, end users may still rely on peripheral accessories such as USBs and removable storage drives, in conjunction with computers, to store and transfer files externally. Every external device that connects to your network endpoints acts as a potential gateway for the next data breach.

Apart from the possibility of a data breach, external devices can easily serve as a host for the entry of malware designed to corrupt, encrypt, or steal sensitive files present in an enterprise network. In most cases the user is completely unaware that their USB storage device contains these malicious programs.

Companies in the financial, telecommunications, and healthcare sectors, as well as government organizations, are at elevated risk of malware attacks and internal data theft. If a breach were to happen in one of these organizations, it could result in sensitive data, such as internal files, employee records, and banking details, becoming compromised.

The use of external devices is inevitable for many enterprises, so closely monitoring access to such devices can go a long way in preserving the integrity of sensitive data found in your network. Device Control Plus is a data leakage prevention (DLP) solution from ManageEngine that keeps track of all peripheral devices that connect to your endpoints from a single point of management.

Unlike conventional DLP solutions, which entrust access to all devices within the network perimeter, Device Control Plus operates on the principle of Zero Trust, where you as the administrator have complete control over which external devices are authorized or blocked.

In simple terms, this means that all external devices will not be trusted by default. You get to select which USB devices to provide access to, all in a few simple steps. Furthermore, Device Control Plus hands you the list of trusted devices for you to manage them in real time.

This security solution also has an integrated USB port blocker that disables USB ports on all untrusted devices by default. Device Control Plus notifies you when a user plugs in a USB device that is not yet registered in your console. This feature aims to greatly minimize malware-based USB attacks. Apart from removable devices such as USBs, Device Control Plus also lets you keep tabs on CD-ROMs, Windows Portable Devices, Apple devices, wireless network adapters, and imaging and biometric devices.

Device Control Plus utilizes role-based access control (RBAC) as a unique, robust security model that lets you set file access rights for users based on their designation, and role within the organization. RBAC allows you to classify roles, build policies pertaining to roles, and associate these policies with individual or groups of computers.

For companies that have multiple departments such as finance, HR, and internal administration, RBAC helps ensure that the right access permissions reach the right type of user. For example, while members of the IT department or high-level staff may have elevated access permissions to copy files to an external drive, the majority of low-level users will be assigned “read only” access.

Another interesting feature of this solution is that you as an IT administrator can grant temporary access for users to transfer files in and out of external USB devices. You can respond to user requests from the product console and grant access for a specified time frame. This has been proven to limit the total number of users who have permissions to transfer sensitive files.

Additionally, Device Control Plus lets you limit the transfer of files based on file size, file type, and file extension. Apart from imposing file transfer restrictions, you can also actively monitor the actions performed each time a device tries to access your files. Actions such as trying to export larger files than the set limit or frequently transferring files with a particular extension are efficiently logged by Device Control Plus and displayed in the product dashboard.

Lastly, no DLP solution is complete without the ability to generate reports. Whether you need to perform device or file audits, or summarize insights for senior management, Device Control Plus has you covered. Schedule the generation of reports with the latest information and effortlessly track file movements across your endpoints with Device Control Plus.

Did you know that apart from the brunt of a data breach, a company may have to expend large sums of money in order to recoup from the breach? This includes the cost of recovery of lost/stolen data and hefty penalties issued from compliance regulatory agencies for failure to maintain internal data integrity.

Device Control Plus comes with all the tools and features necessary to maintain compliance to regulatory policies and adds a layer of security to your organization. As with most ManageEngine products, Device Control Plus provides a 30-day free trial for you to get firsthand experience using the product before you decide to purchase it.
