Comet Review

Editors' Review by the Backup Software Review Team

Comet is a secure, all-in-one backup solution. This backup service supports 12 different languages across 120 countries, allowing businesses worldwide to have control over their backup environment and storage location. The different possible storage destinations include a company’s local servers, Google Cloud Storage, Azure, Backblaze, and Wasabi.

Comet can back up a wide variety of files and software, including Windows, MacOS and Linux devices, disks, partitions, Microsoft Office 365, individual files and folders, MySQL and MongoDB databases, Microsoft SQL and Hyper-V servers, Application-Aware VMs, and local Synology solutions. Comet compresses and encrypts files during the backup process to secure them from unwanted access by bad actors or unauthorized personnel. Additionally, the backups are incremental, and the oldest ones can easily be accessed just as fast as the newest backups.

Different businesses worldwide will be able to secure their data without needing to worry about the price, as the cost of Comet’s backup solutions is scalable. This service is ideal for IT service providers, MSPs, IT companies, backup providers, and in-house IT teams.

Comet Features

Comet’s suite of features is straightforward to understand, allowing IT teams to easily use the software to back up operating systems and files without losing even the oldest data. Comet’s core features are the following:

Fast access to files

Comet uses a chunking method to enable it to quickly access both new and old backups. This is used to power client-side deduplication without the need for any full re-uploads after the first backup, making all backups incremental forever.

Data deduplication

Using Comet as a backup solution allows users to take advantage of client-side data deduplication, which breaks down data into compressed and encrypted chunks. This makes it possible to have fast access to backed up data while also reducing storage overhead.

Free customer support

Businesses will be able to take advantage of the free customer support Comet offers. Users can contact Comet through the chatbot on their website or access the helpdesk through the Comet dashboard.

White-label

IT service providers will be able to enjoy Comet’s white-label feature, which allows them to rebrand the software solution. This eliminates the need for an IT company to develop their backup solution, as they can use the same one they’re using to back up their systems.

Multi-language support

Comet currently supports 14 different languages in the 21.9.11 version of its software. Users can set their language from Comet’s supported languages, which are English, Danish, German, Spanish, French, Croatian, Italian, Dutch, Brazilian, Portuguese, European, Russian, Hebrew, Thai, and Traditional Chinese.

Comet’s team is mostly comprised of English-speaking people, but it contracts translation services to ensure that the platform supports other languages. Customers can contact Comet if they want to correct a translation or if they want to translate Comet to another language through GitHub.

Third-party integrations

Businesses can use Comet’s integrations to expand their solution’s capabilities. Comet’s partners can provide users with more ways to access their cloud storage, do billing and accounting tasks, and monitor success rates with dashboards.

Comet security features

All files and data backed up by Comet are kept safe through end-to-end encryption while complying with industry-leading security standards. The different security features available include firewall security, built-in SSL with Let’s Encrypt integration, self-contained architecture by design, LDAP/AD integration, client-side encryption compliant with NIST’s AES-256-CTR standards, a background service that operates as a restricted permissions account, 2FA, TLS 1.3 “A” security, Administrator IP Allowlist configuration, YubiKey/U2F hardware security keys, and group policies to control edit access. These security features can effectively secure files and systems from bad actors.

Additionally, Comet always uses a random high-entropy encryption key that is stored in the Comet Server and protected by a zero-knowledge ratchet over the user’s password. Should a user’s PC be lost, they only need the end user’s password to rediscover the encryption key. The only way for both the password and encryption key to be visible on the server is by enabling the “allow administrator to reset my password” option.

How Comet Works

Comet Benefits

Comet helps many companies back up their data and keep it secure at an affordable price. The base charge is affordable and already has support for file and folder backups that can be useful for a company’s 3-2-1 backup strategy. Using Comet as a backup solution gives businesses plenty of benefits, including the following:

Scalable plans

Small companies and IT teams will be able to use Comet and take advantage of its scalable pricing by opting for the Base Charge to get basic functionalities and back up only a small number of devices. Businesses won’t have to pay for services they don’t need, and they’ll have full control, which will allow them to keep costs down.

Larger companies have the option to use a Comet-hosted server, Comet’s storage powered by Wasabi and the CloudView CRM, instead of being forced to pay for the additional service.

Client-side deduplication

Deduplication is necessary to conserve bandwidth and save storage space, which also makes accessing backups a lot faster than solutions that use server-side deduplication. Additionally, all data is broken into compressed and encrypted chunks, which is what helps with both bandwidth and storage efficiency.

Compressed and encrypted data

All files and data are compressed and encrypted, allowing people to protect their data from any bad actor attacks. Comet keeps information secure with end-to-end encryption during the backup process, transit, and when it’s already stored in both local and cloud storage.

Encryption is mandatory when using Comet, and the platform’s client-side encryption allows users to use any storage provider while being confident that their data remains encrypted. The encryption uses hardware-accelerated instruction, resulting in minimal CPU usage. Comet uses a random high-entropy encryption key that must be securely stored to prevent it from getting lost.

Compliant with data protection regulations

Comet complies with industry standards for data encryption and cloud data protection. Comet uses advanced encryption compliant with NIST’S AES-256-CTR standards, and the Comet Self-Hosted server is HIPAA and GDPR-compliant.

Comet Pricing

The cost of subscribing to Comet starts at $2 and users will have control over what functionalities they’ll pay for. Comet charges per device, so it’s possible for small companies to only have to pay a minimum of $2 to back up the data on a single computer. If a company uses a Synology NAS, they’ll have to pay a minimum of $3.

Comet comes with a base offering, eight boosters, and three additional services. The base offerings cost $2 per device, while the cost of the boosters ranges from $1 to $3 per device. For the boosters, Disk Image Backup costs $3 per device, Microsoft Office 365 costs $1.50 per user, Microsoft Hyper-V and Synology each cost $1 per host, and Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, and Application-Aware Writer each cost $1 per device. For the additional services, the Comet-Hosted Server costs $49 for the first 500 devices and boosters and an additional $39 for every additional 500 devices and boosters. Comet Storage costs $5.99 per TB per month, and CloudView CRM costs $49. Users will have full control over which of these functionalities they get to use, so there’s potential to keep costs down.

Users won’t be charged for rebranding, replication, updates, support, or  Comet server licenses. Usage is computed on a 30-day basis and the account credit does not expire. Comet offers a 30-day free trial for new users and a 14-day customer guarantee, where if an account is deleted within 14 days of its creation, all charges will be automatically refunded.

Comet charges monthly fees using device fees that are applied and deducted in real-time. Adding a device on the 3rd day of this month will result in getting charged on the 3rd day of next month. Users can buy credit packs ranging from $100 to $10,000 in order to set up automatic payments. Credit packs purchased after August 9, 2021 do not have an expiration date.

Conclusion

Comet is a cost-effective and scalable backup solution that is available to a wide range of companies and users. Small businesses won’t have to worry about overspending as the cost is fixed per device and boosters and additional services are optional purchases.

At a low cost of a minimum of $2, users will have access to a HIPAA and GDPR-compliant secure backup solution. Even when only using the base offer, both large and small businesses can benefit from a secure platform that uses end-to-end encryption to encrypt files, due to the client-side deduplication used by Comet.

Small businesses can get the right backup solution for their needs without having to pay a lot if only a limited number of devices need to be backed up. When a company purchases a lot of computers or additional NAS solutions, the devices can be added to Comet as long as they are supported.

"Fast and secure backups of my data."

What do you like about Comet?

I like Comet because it allows me to quickly and easily configure plans to carry out backup copies of my work, its organized and intuitive interface allows me to develop functions easily, its fairly low learning curve so that any user can configure the software by himself. Unlike other software with Comet I can choose the provider that best suits my needs, I can also provide part of my storage space to my clients or increase it as needed, this makes it flexible and very scalable, and I must mention I find your support team very efficient, I have had some doubt and it has been answered immediately.

What do you dislike about Comet?

I have realized that its GUI can be more customizable so that it adjusts more to the user's needs, however the fact that it is easy to use is a very good point, on the other hand its cost may not be very accessible in some complementary functions, but considering its level of efficiency, the price may be something to consider, also its connection is sometimes slow, but it may be the internet connection.

What have you been using it for and what problems did Comet solve?

I have benefited from this software in several ways, firstly because I can put aside having to make backups manually, as this process can take time, thanks that I can manage myself if I want to expand or not the storage I only pay for what I really need, I can keep my information safe and even that of my clients because it makes it possible to share the space if desired.
